Letter from the CEO
Spring 2009

Sandra L. Katanick,
CAE CEO

As we prepare for spring and the many changes that the new season will bring, it is exciting to anticipate the changes occurring at the IAC. As reported on page 4, the IAC Board of Directors adopted a mission statement at their recent February meeting. The statement answers the question of why the IAC exists and will help communicate this concept to participating laboratories, sponsoring organizations, referring physicians, Medicare and third party payers and patients, among others. We are pleased to now have a strong description of the role and purpose of the IAC and both our volunteer network and staff will strive to follow the defined mission as we continue to steer the existing five accreditation divisions and develop subsequent ones.

As noted in the newsletter (view article), we are moving our offices and effective May 1st, will be settled in a new location that will enable us to continue providing a high level of services to our participating laboratories. Please make note of our new address: 6021 University Boulevard, Suite 500, Ellicott City, MD 21043.

Within this issue, the ICAVL brings to the forefront the importance of documentation in protecting one’s laboratory and self against the unfortunately all too common medical malpractice lawsuit. Echocardiography laboratories will find an article defining the qualifications of the Technical Director, as well as other important aspects of this role. The ICANL details the many enhancements to the accreditation program for nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology and PET laboratories that will take place this spring and summer. These include paperless submissions, the ability of applicant laboratories to submit applications at any time throughout the year, rather than adhering to the previous quarterly deadlines, and the CME Committee’s development of the new CME Predetermination List which is published on www.icanl.org. As a high percentage of applicant laboratories continue to experience delay issues which prevent accreditation from being awarded outright, both the ICAMRL and ICACTL have focused on the most common causes for delay and ways to avoid potential issues prior to application submission.

I hope that we have met our ongoing goal of providing content that is useful to you in your daily diagnostic imaging activities and as always, I encourage you to reach out to us with suggestions for future content.

Sandra L. Katanick, CAE
CEO
